I believe all preschool teachers should be licensed, just as K-12 teachers are. It is a common misconception that you don’t need to know anything to teach preschoolers. This statement, this thought process is false. It is precisely why Early Childhood Professionals are not seen as true professionals. I believe providing preschool teachers with the chance to become licensed by their state shows stakeholders, community members, community leaders, and parents that Preschool teachers are professionals and highly qualified, knowledgeable, and educated professionals, just as K-12 teachers are.
I believe by licensing preschool teachers; early childhood education will receive the recognition it deserves. We will begin to see a surge in peoples supporting and advocating for Early Childhood Education. This, in turn, may get the profession the funding it so desperately needs.
Licensing ECE teachers also encourage further education into the field by caregivers. To be licensed, you would have to obtain certain degrees and maintain professional development hours. This will enable providers to seek higher education, which provides higher levels of education for the children in their care. It is crucial to keep in mind that Early Care professionals lay the foundation for all other education.
When you let that sink in and realize how influential it is, you wonder why we don’t pay more attention to ECE as a society.
Several states do license their preschool teachers. However, not all states do; it is time to bring all states to the table and provide licensure to all ECE professionals.
